Next-generation probes, particles, and proteins for neural interfacing

Bidirectional interfacing with the nervous system enables neuroscience research, diagnosis, and therapy. This two-way communication allows us to monitor the state of the brain and its composite networks and cells as well as to influence them to treat disease or repair/restore sensory or motor function. To provide the most stable and effective interface, the tools of the trade must bridge the soft, ion-rich, and evolving nature of neural tissue with the largely rigid, static realm of microelectronics and medical instruments that allow for readout, analysis, and/or control. In this Review, we describe how the understanding of neural signaling and material-tissue interactions has fueled the expansion of the available tool set. New probe architectures and materials, nanoparticles, dyes, and designer genetically encoded proteins push the limits of recording and stimulation lifetime, localization, and specificity, blurring the boundary between living tissue and engineered tools. Understanding these approaches, their modality, and the role of cross-disciplinary development will support new neurotherapies and prostheses and provide neuroscientists and neurologists with unprecedented acc...

The Merida Silex+ 6000 is a nimble-handling gravel/adventure bike that offers plenty of versatility along with a comfortable ride courtesy of chunky 650B tyres. Our sister website off.road.cc reviewed the Silex 9000 a couple of years ago – doesn’t time fly? – and now Merida has added two Silex+ bikes to the range. What is Silex+? It’s nothing to do with the geometry or the frame material, which remain the same, it’s down to the wheels and tyres. “We are offering the Silex in two options – the ‘classic’ Silex, standing on 700C wheels, being the perfect ‘all-road’ bike which loves lanes, forest tracks and gravel, and the new more ‘rugged’ Silex+ version, which can easily tackle more demanding terrain due to its more burly 650B wheels and 45mm tyres,” says Merida. If you don’t keep this info filed away in your head, 700C wheels have a diameter of 622mm while 650B wheels measure 584mm across and, as Merida says, the smaller wheels allow the fitting of larger tyres into the same frame and fork. Everything else being identical, you can swap between wheel sizes at a later date. The Silex+ 6000 offers qui...

Researchers at UT have developed a free open source computer program that can be used to

Researchers at UT have developed a free open source computer program that can be used to create visual and quantitative representations of brain electrical activity in laboratory animals in hopes of developing countermeasures for opioid use disorder. The program is described in a paper published in JoVE. Lead author Christopher O’Brien is a UT graduate who manages the research laboratory of Helen Baghdoyan and Ralph Lydic, both co-authors on the paper and professors in UT’s Department of Psychology and the Graduate School of Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology. In the paper, the researchers describe the steps they took to create a multitapered spectrogram for electroencephalogram (EEG) analyses with an accessible and user-friendly code. They validated the program through analyses of EEG spectrograms of mice that had received different opioid treatments. “There is a misconception that opioids promote sleep, but in quantitative studies of states of sleep and wakefulness using electroencephalographic recordings of brain waves, opiates are shown to disrupt sleep,” Lydic said. “Additionally, drug addiction studies show that abnormal sleep is as...

UK-based Admiral Tapes is launching Edge-Tex, a self-adheisve PVC strip that is used to lock printed

UK-based Admiral Tapes is launching Edge-Tex, a self-adheisve PVC strip that is used to lock printed fabric into the channel of aluminium (LED, back-lit and front-lit frames) to create a flat tensioned surface. The product is intended to remove the need to use an industrial sewing machine as it can be applied by hand, simplifying installation of printed graphics.  Admiral says the special adhesive system ingresses into the fabric to provide a strong long-term bond. Graphics can also be inserted and exchanged into different frames as required.  Edge-Tex is denser than the traditional silicone strip that is used for this application, which provides an additional benefit because the reduced stretch is more compatible with fabric, according to the firm. Adobe will be demonstrating its new Project Paras tool for Photoshop, which is designed to help creatives to streamline the process of designing fabrics. Project Paras enables the creation of a pattern that repeats on a grid, so fabric artists can view their design element in the context of the surrounding repeat. It can also be used to define separations for printing, by identifying the most significant colours in a design. It enab...

Laser cutters sold on Amazon are cheap, fun—and dangerous

An award-winning team of journalists, designers, and videographers who tell brand stories through Fast Company’s distinctive lens Once upon a time, an aircraft pilot looking down toward the ground saw only the distant twinkling lights of homes and cities. But pilots have had an unfortunate high-tech worry for many years: powerful handheld laser pointers. These devices can produce a beam that’s both focused and powerful enough to reach a pilot’s line of sight, either directly—or, more typically—by reflecting within a cabin. Such a beam can temporarily blind or disorient the person guiding a plane. Because of this risk, authorities on the ground, the FAA, and electronics resellers have all issued warnings for these pointers. They’re regulated under the Federal Drug Administration’s purview, which assigns each laser product a class number from 1 to 4—from exceedingly safe to rather dangerous without special care and training. Amazon, for example, details a number of rules and limitations for third-party merchants relating to laser-based pointers, toys, stage lighting, and garden illumination. This includes barring the sale of higher-powered devices with lasers that fall into ...

(Editor’s Note: This article is the last in a 10-part series on iconic United States construction

(Editor’s Note: This article is the last in a 10-part series on iconic United States construction projects.) One highway project stands out in the history of U.S. construction for its complexity, problems and ultimate achievement: Boston’s “Big Dig.” Now 99 percent complete, this excavation, tunneling, and road and bridge project has burrowed underneath the length of Boston. As wide as an interstate highway, it has been painstakingly built through unstable landfill, nine railroad tracks, scores of glass and steel office towers, and many fragile, older brick buildings without disturbing them and without seriously disrupting the city’s business or destroying historic artifacts, including remains of buildings from early settlements. Though it has been marred by mishaps, lawsuits and spending issues, the Big Dig has accomplished great things in the 16 years since construction began. Officially called the Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T), it represents major construction advances. These include ingenious “jacking boxes” to excavate beneath operating railroad tracks; the largest use of slurry construction techniques in North America; and fabricating, in a huge casting basin, six ...

Ban on launching of housing societies extended in capital – Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration on Monday extended the ban on launching of housing societies for two more months to counter land grabbing in the federal capital. The step was taken after it was brought to the notice of the district magistrate that some housing societies, trusts, limited companies and groups were operating in Islamabad in the manner not warranted by the law. A notification said they allured the citizens by advertising the launching of housing schemes in newspapers, magazines, brochures and booklets. They also invited membership either in excess of the land available to them or without having any land at all. This practice results into exposition, fraud, forgery, disputes, offence, law and order problems and massive litigations in courts. “Speculative transactions also emerge out of the situation which jeopardise the interest of the public and deprive it of its hard earned money, thus creating panic and anxiety in society,” the notification stated. Under such circumstances, two months’ ban was imposed on any sort of publication regarding launching of any such housing scheme or sale of plots, inviting applications to deposit membersh...
