When it was introduced for the 2013 model year, Mazda had high hopes for the CX-5.

When it was introduced for the 2013 model year, Mazda had high hopes for the CX-5. But, the model has been a major disappointment with sales in 2014 not even hitting the 100,000 mark while models from competitors, like the Honda CR-V, for example, saw much higher numbers to the tune of 350,000 examples sold. The CX-5 was facelifted in 2016, but it still failed to meet expectations, despite having a fair amount of muscle under the hood. Consider the CX-5 isn’t exactly a slouch, it must be the design that turns customers away, so Mazda got to work. It didn’t take long for Mazda to complete the second-gen model, and it made its debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show sporting an awesome new body color, G-Vectoring Control, a revamped body shell, slightly wider stance, and the addition of Mazda’s SKYACTIV, 2.2-liter diesel engine as an option for U.S. buyers. The hardest thing Mazda really has to overcome is how overcrowded the compact SUV segment really is. Big names like CR-V, Escape, Equinox, and Rav 4 all resonate through the minds of those looking for the best ride in this segment, and that doesn’t help a newer model like the CX-5 – being around just a few years – establish a g...

Aerospace Shop Finds New Productivity in Brass Parts

Three partners contributed their diverse manufacturing and machining experience—and their last initials—to found SPR Machine in Hamilton, Ohio in 2002. The machine shop has grown from a shop floor with 2,500 ft2 (232 m2) to one with 78,000 ft2 (7,246 m2) filled with 14 mills, lathes, and welding and inspection equipment. SPR produces high-quality work from 60″ (1.5 m) down to 0.0005″ (0.013 mm) for customers predominantly in the aerospace and medical industries. All that talent, experience and entrepreneurial energy make SPR Machine an open-minded shop that approaches new growth challenges with enthusiasm. One of those challenges presented itself in the form of a part-material switch from steel to brass. SPR Machine jumped at the opportunity to see how much cycle time could be saved through high-speed machining. It wound up leading the shop to new equipment, insights, personnel qualifications and a renewed respect for the versatility and machining performance of brass. The opportunity arose when co-founder and company vice president Scott Pater combined his passion to race off-road and radio-controlled (RC) cars with a friend’s engineering expertise. When the friend created a re...

2 women hospitalized this week after trying to use a VACUUM hose to end their periods early

A nurse in Seattle claims two young women were hospitalized this week after trying to use a vacuum hose to end their periods early. She said the women were aged 23 and 19, and both went into ‘shock’ after the DIY method triggered a rush of blood, rather than the stop they had hoped for. So-called ‘Menstrual Extraction’ was first described by feminist activists Lorraine Rothman and Carol Downer in the 1970s as a way to perform an at-home abortion before Roe v Wade.  They described how to construct a contraption – called a Del Em – using a syringe, a cannula, a speculum, and a jar.  But as Mic reported in 2016, it has seen a resurgence in popularity, this time being pitched as a method to end periods early.   A nurse said the women were aged 23 and 19, and both went into ‘shock’ after the DIY method triggered a rush of blood, rather than the stop they had hoped for The nurse who posted the tweet, added: ‘I don’t know if it was Eureka, Dyson, Hoover or some Walmart brand, but yes… An actual vacuum cleaner.’ She added: ‘Your period has a steady flow of it’s own that for all intents and purposes your...

Kādas ziņas atvedi no Amerikas?Katra nākamā vasara man ir pati svarīgākā un šī vasara nebūs izņēmums. Drīz sākšu pilnā sparā trenēties, lai sagatavotos nākamajai sezonai. Tāpat šovasar spēlēšu Latvijas izlasē. Būs interesanti! Kā nonāci pie lēmuma spēlēt valstsvienībā?Iepriekšējās vasarās man bija jāstrādā, lai sevi sagatavotu pirmajām sezonām NBA, pirmkārt, nostiprinātu sevi fiziski. Šosezon ar komandu netiku izslēgšanas spēlēs un radās vairāk laika, ko ieguldīt savā attīstībā. Spēlēšana izlasē var tam noderēt. Par spēlēšanu vals...

Daimler Buses Relies on DyeMansion for Color & Texture Quality in 3D Printed Spare Parts

While it took decades for the rest of the world to catch up, a handful of aerospace organizations, automotive industry leaders, and other innovators have continued to enjoy the inside track on 3D printing and additive manufacturing processes—progressing from the use of polymers to metal. Daimler was one of the forerunners in using 3D printing, and as the technology has continued to pick up steam and infiltrate the mainstream, the German-headquartered company has embraced it further too, with Daimler Buses set up in 2016 to begin 3D printing spare parts. Dye Mansion recently released a case study on Daimler Buses and their successful disruption of the supply chain within their realm of the automotive industry. The initial project began with the founding of the Center of Competence 3D Printing, headed by Ralf Anderhofstadt. Selective laser sintering was tested for the production of visible spare parts in the Customers Services and Parts department as the research and development teams worked to reinvent the supply chain not just for worldwide spare part manufacturing, but also the after-sales business. Other companies such as DyeMansion, Additive Minds, and EOS were involved in th...

Personalised numberplates are very divisive things, prompting either admiration at the name or message on the plate, or derided for being a vanity item and dismissed as a waste of money.  Whatever you think of them, boggle at the top ten most expensive numberplates ever sold in the UK below. For reference, we’ve even calculated what else you could buy with the money, in car terms.  The registration plate 25 O relates to the most expensive car ever sold at auction: the Ferrari 250 GTO. The plate’s £518,480 price tag may be dwarfed by the car’s £30,750,300 final bid, but it’s the most expensive plate sold in the UK yet.  According to reports on the sale of the plate, it currently resides on, fittingly, a 1961 Ferrari 250 SWB (pictured), belonging to classic car dealer John Collins. The price of the plate could get you ten Audi TT RSs, but personalised plate vendor Regtransfers reckons it’s now increased in value, to £750,000 (fifteen TT RSs).  New-shape baby Peugeot fares well with improved rear end and small engines. Can it threaten the class leaders? Taking a close second place is the registration plate X 1. Little is known about the owner of the plate or what car it’s on,...

Remote control crane operation: Heavy lifting made easy

Cranes are critical in a number of industries, including aircraft/aerospace, auto manufacturing, chemicals and minerals, pulp and paper, steel production, and utilities, as well as the grain industry, logging, rail yards, and ship loading. Traditionally, industrial cranes have been operated by human operators sitting in cabs in the cranes. In such instances, the operator’s actions are guided by the hand signals of a person outside of the crane. “In the past, cranes were operated by the cab operators,” says Brad Robinson, president of Robinson Engineering, which has been offering remote control technologies since 1962. “The guy on the ground was hooking the chains, doing the loading, and having to wave his hands to direct the operator where to move the crane.” In other cases, rather than have an operator sitting in a cab, a person outside of the crane would operate the unit, using pendant pushbutton stations suspended from the crane. In recent decades, technology has advanced to the point where cranes can be operated by remote control. While this technology has been around since the 1960s, it has continued to improve over the years, with newer system...

At a time when the communications networking market’s attention has been drawn toward the bright light

At a time when the communications networking market’s attention has been drawn toward the bright light of software enablement, it’s important to remember that hardware developments are still of critical importance: That was a point well made by Gilles Garcia from Xilinx during a video conversation at this year’s Big 5G Event in Denver. Acacia reminded us of this again this week with the release of its AC1200-SC2 (yeah, that’s a “squared” sign), which, the company boasts, is the “first single-chip coherent module to deliver 1.2 Tbit/s on a single channel.” (Single “c” x single “c” = single “c” squared, right?) That’s not just boasting for the sake of it: The single chip and single channel capabilities (plus flexibility in terms of channel widths) are important to Acacia’s customers because, in effect, they are getting the equivalent of multiple products rolled into one, in a simpler form factor and with the ability to enable significant data transmission over one optical channel. One of Acacia’s customers, ECI Telecom, highlighted these benefits in a press release quote, noting ...

When it comes to excavators, He Qinghua uses a word not heard that often to describe

When it comes to excavators, He Qinghua uses a word not heard that often to describe heavy construction equipment: “fashionable”. But to He, the founder of Sunward Intelligent Equipment Co Ltd, the word aptly describes the design of one of his company’s main products. “The mini excavators often work in urban areas. The fashionable appearance will add beauty to the constructions sites,” he said with great pride. Founded in 1999 by He, a mechanical and electrical engineering professor at Central South University, the Changsha, China-based company has grown into an international enterprise with total assets exceeding $951 million.
