Whatever Happened to … Pillars restaurant and bar?

Located in the Wilder Building on Exchange Street in Rochester, it was the kind of place where all sorts of downtown types mingled. This conversation is moderated according to USA TODAY’s community rules. Please read the rules before joining the discussion. Pillars was a venerable no-frills bar that became an institution in the heart of downtown Rochester for half a century. Located in the Wilder Building on Exchange Street, it was the kind of place where all sorts of downtown types mingled. Staff from the nearby Gannett newspapers were especially fond of Pillars, which catered to its late-night reporters, editors, photographers and pressmen until the wee hours. A Democrat and Chronicle reporter once described Pillars as “a neighborhood bar in as neighbor-less a place as the Four Corners is.” It was the last survivor of what another reporter labeled “the fabled Exchange Street saloons.” “I think there was talk once of adding a telephone extension from the paper’s switchboard,” wrote former photographer John G. Walter, now of Washington, D.C., on a Facebook post. March 1987: Carol and Tony Infantino pictured at The Pillars restaurant/bar. (Photo: File photo/Newspapers.com)...

Global Amorphous Polyalphaolefin Market Industry: A Latest Research Report to Share Market Insights and Dynamics

An amorphous a-olefin copolymer, commonly referred to as APAO (Amorphous polyalpha olefin), is a random copolymer obtained by polymerization of a-olefins and belongs to a plastomer material. Access Report Details at: https://www.themarketreports.com/report/global-amorphous-polyalphaolefin-market-research-report Because of its low molecular weight and high degree of randomness, APAO can exhibit different properties of isotactic polyolefins and can be applied to different applications. APAO’s aliases are: amorphous polyolefins, also known in some regions as APOs, amorphous polyalphaolefins, or APP resins. This product has been widely used in asphalt modification, hot melt and pressure sensitive adhesives, sealing materials due to its excellent low temperature, high temperature performance, water resistance, anti-oxidation and UV resistance, and good miscibility with organic phase. 20 Obvious (& Not-So-Obvious) Items to Pack for Camp

Summer camp is a staple of American culture. As soon as school’s out, camp gears up and takes tons of kids and toddlers (yes, toddlers have camps!) for the day, or weeks at a time in some wooded area. It’s a time for the kiddos to get away from the hustle-and-bustle of life, to interact with other kids their age, and — most importantly — give parents and guardians the breaks they so desperately need. Some parents have never been to camp before, while others are veterans. But of those who have some kind of experience with it, camp comes highly recommended. As one mom wrote for CafeMom: “It establishes independence — Sure, going into a new situation where they don’t know anyone can be a little bit scary at first, but kids need to learn to be comfortable being away from their parents.” Camp does other cool things for kids, too, like giving them routine, a mental break, and keeping them active. But with camp comes (dun dun dun) the packing. Now, packing for anything isn’t anyone’s favorite thing. Packing for a kid doing something that’s not entirely known is even harder. And with some camps banning care packages from ...

This Guy Offered “Free Dad Hugs” At Pittsburgh Pride And Was Met With Tears BuzzFeed News Home Menu Icon Twitter Facebook Copy BuzzFeed News Logo Close Twitter Facebook Copy Facebook Twitter Instagram BuzzFeed News Home BuzzFeed Close Twitter Facebook Copy

Scott Dittman — better known to his friends as Howie — says he doesn’t wake up in the morning thinking of himself as an LGBT ally. But, last weekend, he still made a big impact. Dittman, 44, heard his friend Denna was heading to Pittsburgh Pride with Free Mom Hugs, an organization that assists LGBT people and also provides hugs at Pride events. “And I just said, ‘well I’m going to go,’ and I hopped on Amazon and grabbed a ‘free dad hugs’ T-shirt,” he told BuzzFeed News. “I just thought it would put a smile on people’s faces.” What he didn’t expect was just how big an effect it had, not only on Pride attendees, but on himself. “I turned around and she’s just standing there in front of me with tears in her eyes,” said Dittman. The second big moment was the man on the left. He told Dittman he was abandoned by his parents when he came out at 19. “He just sobbed and sobbed and thanked us,” said Dittman. “He just melted. It was an honor to be involved in that, but it was terrible at the same time.” He said there were all kinds of hugs that day — happy ones, ones with tears, ones full of joy...
